Clianthus maximus, kakabeak

Did you know that there are less than 200 kakabeak left in the wild in New Zealand? That makes them particularly rare, and they are only found in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne. The seed for this plant comes from near the Mohaka River. Gorgeous pinky red flowers in spring. Clianthus maximus, kakabeak, has elegant arching branches. Likes partial shade and is frost hardy when mature. Protect from slugs and snails which find kakabeak delicious.
