Eleocharis sphacelata, kutakuta

Relatively common outside of Hawke’s Bay, but known from only two sites in the Bay. Eleocharis sphacelata, kutakuta is a dramatic addition to a wetland; its spikes are large and hollow, and the tips look like a pencil. Very different from any other wetland sedge. Prefers its roots submerged in fresh water.
