Pittosporum ralphii, Ralph’s karo is the best shelter tree in Hawke’s Bay: it is tough and can cope with winds and dry. It doesn’t get too big, and it is well branched. It likes full sun and is good for bees. It’s also good for birds to nest in. It’s found throughout Hawke’s Bay and the seed for this tree was collected from near Kereru.
