Entelea arborescens, whau
Entelea arborescens, whau, is a dramatic small tree for coastal areas of Hawke’s Bay. It has large soft leaves, and grows very quickly. Its luscious white flowers sit up on top of leaf clusters and are followed by spiky fruits. The wood of whau is lighter than balsa and was used for fishing floats. Uncommon in Hawke’s Bay.
